Its mission is to build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. Girls gain specific knowledge, skills, attitudes, behaviors, and values in Girl Scouting. The focus of Girl Scout activities is known as the "Three Keys" to Leadership: Discover, Connect, Take Action. Valley United Way’s support helps us remove financial barriers to girls wishing to participate in Girl Scouting who could not otherwise do so. Financial assistance is awarded for membership dues, uniforms, sashes and badges, admission to special events like Connecticut Sun Sixth Annual Girl Scout Sun Fest, and summer day and resident camp program fees. Community Service projects are an important core component of the Girl Scout experience. Girl Scouting instills leadership abilities which encourages girls to become actively engaged in and to become advocates for their local communities. Girl Scouting allows girls to identify community needs, Girls are resourceful problem solvers. Girls advocate for themselves and others, locally and globally. Girls inspire and educate others to act. Girls feel empowered to make a difference in the world. One example is the "Rent a Girl Scout" project benefitting Yale-New Haven Hospital’s toy chest in which 512 Girl Scouts from Shelton did chores for families and friends in exchange for toy contributions. Another service project was the sponsorship of a spring rabies clinic for 60 cats and dogs whose proceeds benefitted the Oxford Dog Pound. There are many, many more. |
