 The Valley United Way’s Corporate Volunteer Council (CVC) held its first Annual Meeting at Center Stage Theatre in Shelton on Thursday, April 2, 2009.  The event recognized the significant impact that Valley businesses have made to the community through their participation on the Corporate Volunteer Council. Members from more than fifty Valley companies were presented with certificates of appreciation from Valley United Way’s President Jack Walsh, Valley United Way’s Chairman of the Board Mike Marcinek and CVC Director Patricia Tarasovic. In addition, Pitney Bowes received the Community Impact Award in recognition of its extraordinary level of participation in 2008.

The evening included remarks by the directors of various charitable agencies, including Carol Kirby from the Red Cross, Susan Agamy of ACT/Spooner House, Susan DeLeon from Birmingham Health Services’ Umbrella Program, Suzanne Reilly from the Valley YMCA, Bob  Walsh from St. Vincent De Paul-Helping Hands, and Janet Onidi from the Parent Child Resource Center. Each speaker shared personal stories about how their clients had benefited from CVC efforts and thanked council members for their generosity.  In addition, attendees were entertained with a musical number by Fran Scarpa, owner of Center Stage Theatre.  Center Stage is a non-profit community theatre that presents first-rate plays, musicals and cabarets in an intimate performance space. Hors d’oeuvres and beverages were provided by David M. Grant Caterers.

In 2008, the Corporate Volunteer Council:

  • Collected an estimated $125,000 in food to ACT/Spooner House Food Bank;
  • Donated 28,000 lbs. of used clothes to My Sister’s Place Thrift Shop, generating $240,000 in revenues to benefit The Umbrella domestic violence program;

 The Valley United Way’s Corporate Volunteer Council is a community action group of more than fifty corporations located in the lower Naugatuck Valley.  Formed in 1995 to promote a partnership between area businesses, charitable agencies and the community at large, the CVC is a network of public and private corporations that meet monthly to partner on volunteer efforts and provide resources to meet community need.  In January, the Valley Council of Health and Human Services presented the Corporate Volunteer Council with the “Program of the Award” in recognition of its contributions to the community.
